Medicare and Gynecological Visits

There is an unfortunate new trend we have been seeing, that has created a tremendous amount of confusion and stress for our clients.

Doctors who have always accepted Medicare assignment (this translates into no cost to you), are now claiming Pap tests and pelvic exams to check for cervical and vaginal cancers are NOT covered by Medicare and are demanding upwards of $300 for the office visit.

THIS IS NOT TRUE!

Medicare covers Pap tests and pelvic exams to check for cervical and vaginal cancers and a clinical breast exam to check for breast cancer. Medicare covers these screening tests once every 24 months.

Medicare will cover these screening tests once every 12 months, if you are at high risk for cervical or vaginal cancer and have had an abnormal Pap test anytime in the past 36 months.

YOU WILL PAY NOTHING IF THE DOCTOR ACCEPTS ASSIGNMENT.

When you book your appointment;

  1. Ask if the doctor ACCEPTS ASSIGNMENT
  2. Specifically note that you are coming for your FREE tests and screening.
  3. If you get a “no” to either 1 or 2 you may want to consider changing doctors.
